The recordings on this 1963 disc are
unusually fine renderings of this score with its overture written when the composer was 17. However, included in this
particular version of what became some of the most well-known music ever written are spoken excerpts from
Shakespeare's play chosen and interwoven with the incidental music by the conductor. For a long time, having
acquired this disc shortly after it was issued, I experienced the spoken lines from the play as intrusions on what I
felt should be the most important element in this recording - namely, the music alone. In the meantime, I hear this LP
somewhat differently. As a rule, sets of dramatic incidental music are presented with their plots, characters, etc.
isolated in supplementary notes. But here, Leinsdorf goes in a different direction toward an original balance in which
the music truly plays an incidental role to the play itself. The music still dominates - as it should in a recording of
incidental music - but within a frame allowing the listener to absorb some of "what it's about" in terms
of Shakespeare's verbal music. In Leinsdorf's arrangement the spoken lines and music can then be said to
support and enhance one another. In a sense, Leinsdorf has fashioned a new unity - and the more I listen to this unique
recording, the more I appreciate it.
